Here is the Mayor’s proclamation that will be declared and shared at city hall:

NATIONAL BICYCLE GREENWAY DAY

September 21, 2014

WHEREAS, the bicycle was the first personal transportation vehicle and
a century ago was an important part of American culture; and

WHEREAS, in 1884 Thomas Stevens rode a HiWheel bicycle from San
Francisco and Oakland to Boston, an accomplishment heard the world
around as his became the first ever bike ride across America and then
around the world; and

WHEREAS, the city of San Francisco recognizes the National Bicycle
Greenway (NBG) mission to build our city into its network of bike
friendly roads and bicycle pathways that will connect Washington, DC
with San San Francisco; and

WHEREAS, San Francisco is a gold-level bicycle friendly city as
recognized by the League of American Bicyclists; and,

WHEREAS, The San Francisco Bicycle Messengers have influenced a community of
bicycling throughout the city streets with fearless athleticism and have
provided the original green service throughout the Bay area.

WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bike Coalition, with its legion of great
volunteers, has worked hard to raise public awareness on bicycling in and has
helped to bring about the 71% increase in cycling San Francisco over the last
five years; and

WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bicycle Ballet will be showing what makes our
city great with a 8-mile tour that visits classic neighborhood celebrities of
San Francisco, spanning from nonprofits to rockers on September 21 for the
National Bicycle Greenway.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, THE MAYOR OF San Francisco do hereby proclaim September
21, 2014 as “NATIONAL BICYCLE GREENWAY DAY” in San Francisco , CA
